Library Assistant

The Johnson Creek Public Library is currently accepting applications for a part-time Library Assistant. We are seeking a forward-thinking, creative, and adaptable individual who is organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently while effectively prioritizing tasks. The ideal candidate will be friendly, reliable, and tech-savvy, with a strong work ethic and a genuine interest in serving the public. Excellent customer service skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to embrace change are essential. Candidates should be comfortable using computers, personal electronic devices, and social media platforms. This role requires someone who can make independent decisions, enjoys working both independently and as part of a team, and is eager to contribute to a welcoming and responsive library environment. Preference may be given to those with Library experience and/or education. The schedule will be for 22 hours a week and include days, one rotating Thursday evening, and 1-2 Saturdays a month. Flexible availability is a plus.

Purpose of Classification

The purpose of this position is to perform cataloging and processing of acquired materials. Maintain serials holdings records. Help to maintain the library collection and the database. Screens the collection for outdated or unused materials following established guidelines. Clean and repair all damaged library materials. Serves as a resource for other library personnel concerning cataloging rules and practices. Coordinate materials loaned through the interlibrary loan (ILS) system for patrons, other libraries and institutions.

This position also performs a wide variety of general library work assisting patrons with daily library operations such as helping find materials, using the CAFÉ catalog, answering questions, and making copies. It also involves checking items in and out using the Polaris system, and other duties as assigned. The work is performed under the supervision of the Library Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Catalog, classify, and process library materials, including books, serials, audiovisual material, and other items

  • Follow library and system standards and protocols when cataloging and classifying materials
  • Maintain and update holdings in library consortium
  • Regularly attend Bridges Library System Café Cataloger Meetings and report significant information back to the Library Director
  • Receive donations of materials and process accordingly
  • Cover and process all new materials
  • Screen the collection for outdated or unused materials following established guidelines
  • Clean and repair materials
  • Process ILL requests
  • Place bulk holds for teachers, homeschool parents, daycares etc.
  • Run and process overdue billing notices
  • Run and process lost, and missing items reports
  • Perform circulation tasks, including sort and shelve materials, check materials in and out, collect fines and fees, register patrons and place holds
  • Provide reference, reader advisory, customer service, and technical assistance within the library
  • Open and close the library
  • Greet everyone who visits the library and maintain positive customer interactions
  • Answer phones
  • Find requested items for hold alerts, bundle, and route to designated libraries
  • Process incoming material from other libraries
  • Collect and record library revenue, count and balance cash drawer
  • Monitor library calendar and place reservations
  • Check, monitor, and respond to library’s general email
  • Maintain patron records
  • Maintain general cleanliness and order of the library including picking up after patrons, straightening stacks, furniture etc.
  • Assist with outreach efforts including, but not limited to, Pop-Up Libraries, Community Events, School Open Houses, delivery of library materials, handing out flyers, and helping to organize events.
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Attend workshops, webinars, and training sessions as part of on-going professional development
  • Adherence to library policies established by the Library Board of Directors including patron privacy and confidentiality
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Required minimum 1-2 evenings per week, 1-2 Saturdays per month, and flexible availability to meet the demands of the library.
  • Up to the first six months of employment shall be a probationary period. Your employment may be terminated during this period at any time without notice, by employer or employee.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities May Include

  • Regularly attend Bridges Library System Circulation Meetings and report significant information back to the Library Director
  • Generate weekly and monthly reports
  • Double-check new customer applications
  • Count, record, and deposit weekly deposits
  • Prepare Curbside Pickups
  • Maintain used bookshelves, posted notices and general cleanliness of library vestibule
  • Collect mail from post office and sort accordingly
  • Assist with the development and implementation of library programming as needed
  • Assist with creation and distribution of flyers
  • Set up displays and maintain bulletin boards

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Library experience, education, or training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job
  • Knowledge of library practices, operations, and collection organization, including the Dewey Decimal System
  • Knowledge of and ability to use internet based technologies, including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn the functions of the library automation system as it relates to circulation services
  • Ability to use social media, basic computer and electronic equipment, including personal electronic devices.
  • Ability to learn and implement current and emerging technologies
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks to meet deadlines with minimum supervision
  • Ability to Identify and trouble-shoot issues
  • Ability to work independently, sometimes with little guidance from supervisor
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Involves semi-routine standardized work, with some latitude for independent judgment regarding choices of action.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which may be subject to frequent change.
  • Ability to function in a team setting
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.

  • Shovel snow from the sidewalk
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with library patrons; Library Director; other employees; and volunteers is required
