Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has a need for a full-time criminal justice faculty member ( P002231) in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice beginning January 2025 for the 2024-2025 academic year. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching in a multi-cultural, two-year environment, and welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Montgomery College provides an excellent opportunity to teach in a large, urban community college setting. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

With over 500 students majoring in criminal justice, faculty strive to meet our student's diverse academic needs by offering a wide array of dynamic and challenging courses that are taught in multiple formats and at a wide array of times, ensuring ease of access for our busy students. The curricula is offered for those already employed in the criminal justice profession as well as students interested in pursuing careers with local, state, federal or private agencies within the field. Students enrolled in our criminal justice courses routinely transfer to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities throughout the country, including the University of Maryland, College Park, Towson University, and the University of Maryland Global Campus. Montgomery College criminal justice faculty are also actively engaged in a number of student support and co-curricular initiatives as evidenced by their efforts in the development of OER/z-cost instructional material, embedded advising, and external partnerships with practitioners, which exposes students to a wide array of curricular and career pathways in the social sciences. The faculty work closely with the agency partners on our program advisory committee to develop curriculum updates, articulation agreements, career workshops, student field trips, and continuing education for criminal justice professionals.

The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment, and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work and utilizing instructional technology. The majority of our courses use open educational resources (OERs) to yield cost savings for the students and the most current content for faculty. Incoming faculty will utilize OERs in alignment with the other faculty in the discipline.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, on-line, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses and instructs courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses and/or teaching online.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teach 30 semester hours of courses per academic year related to Administration of Justice and other criminal justice courses as appropriate (e.g., Criminal Law, Criminal Evidence, Constitutional Law, Theory and Practice, and Introduction to Corrections).

  • Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend, online, off campus, dual enrollment, and/or accelerated sections. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer and winter classes.

  • Serve on or lead department, discipline, campus, or college-wide committees; participate in criminal justice coordination at the campus; and mentor part-time faculty.

  • Apply culturally relevant and empathic pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.

  • Engage students in their learning through active collaborative learning approaches.

  • Engage in student outreach events to increase visibility of the criminal justice program and to improve the learning outcomes of students taking criminal justice classes.

  • Incorporate the use of educational enterprise platforms (such as Blackboard) into instruction, including zero-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.

  • Communicate with criminal justice faculty on other campuses to ensure a consistent student learning experience.

  • Implement embedded advising and/or embedded classroom support services, and

  • Advise students about discipline course offerings, academic planning, related certificates, transfer opportunities, and careers in criminal justice.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in criminal justice, criminology, law, or another related discipline (graduate coursework must include courses that reflect both depth and breadth in criminal justice).

  • Recent teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Teaching done at the level of a graduate student, teaching assistant, or law enforcement training academy will be considered.

  • Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.

  • Demonstrated commitment to student success including increasing retention, transfer, graduation, and community engagement.

  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor or Doctorate in criminal justice or a related discipline.

  • Experience teaching a variety of courses in criminal justice.

  • Evidence of innovative curriculum development to serve diverse student populations.

  • Demonstrated experience using various teaching modalities/formats (e.g., seat-based, blended/hybrid, HyFlex, OER, and online).

  • Experience using teaching technologies (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).

  • Experience providing academic advising, career advising, and other student support services.

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.

  • A willingness and/or experience teaching distance education courses.

  • Experience with committees, advisory groups, volunteer experience, or integrated services.
